Chapter 15

Rae, Maddox, and Ky sat in the waiting room of Pinnacle Hospital. After arriving, they sat in silence as they waited for an update from the doctor. Ky was pacing; she could not stop herself. Her mind was racing through everything that had happened over the past month.

Since she began working with Chase, they had become closer. Ky had not realized how he grounded her when she was stressed. Now, when she needed him most, his absence forced her into a lonely depression. After speaking with the doctor, Maddox tried to calm her nerves. His positivity was not working as he had hoped. She was too lost in her negative thoughts to relax. The fear of losing him took control of her.

Rae sat in complete silence after they arrived at the hospital. She could not find words to convey her worry for Chase or words of comfort for her sister. She was always able to help calm Ky when she was upset. This was different. Chase made it different. She was the one that pointed out to Ky that the two of them were attracted to each other. Seeing her twin emotionally shattered after the day's events was gut-wrenching.

The pair of them suffered an unimaginable loss when their mother died. The thought of losing Chase was devastating. If something happened to him... if he... she could not even think of the words. She would not allow those thoughts to enter her mind.

A middle-aged doctor in black surgical scrubs entered through the door of the waiting room. The three of them jumped to their feet, eager for an update. The doctor paused as he looked at each of them before resting his eyes on Maddox.

"It's touch and go at the moment. We’re trying to stay hopeful, but as it stands right now, things aren’t looking promising," reported the doctor.

"What exactly are his injuries, Dr. Emerson?" asked Maddox with a solemn face.

"Chase sustained a brutal beating. He has five broken ribs, a femur fracture, and a large laceration on his right bicep. He has a skull fracture, and we are closely monitoring his brain for bleeding and swelling. His right eye socket is severely injured, but we’re optimistic there will be no permanent damage to his vision. It’ll be a couple of days before we can give a better update on his injuries. Right now, we need to monitor his brain activity and check for internal bleeding."

The update relieved some of the stress because now they knew what they were working with, but at the same time, the prognosis was grim. Ky collapsed to the floor, her head on her knees, arms tightly wrapped around them. She sobbed.

"Is there any indication of who or what caused these injuries?" Maddox questioned the doctor.

"We have taken skin and nail scrapings and combed his body for foreign DNA. The lab is processing the samples, and a report will be sent to Pinnacle Police and the Council."

Maddox nodded and shook the doctor's hand in thanks as he bowed quietly out of the room to update the Council.
